Buntes und Farbiges - Colorful and colored

Jawohl, ich hab es gemacht - Wolle gefärbt!
Nein, nicht professionell - dafür habe ich keinen Platz und keine Ausrüstung -, sondern mit Kool Aid!
Aber mal einen kurzen Ausflug in die Färbeküche zu machen, das stand schon lange auf meinem Plan, und am Sonntag habe ich es endlich in Angriff genommen!

Yes, I did it - dying wool!
No, not profesionally - I really have no place and no tools for this -, but with Kool Aid!
Making a short trip into the dying shed was on my list for quite a time, and on Sunday I really did it!

Auslöser war, dass sich eines meiner beiden Lieblingskinder zu Weihnachten Harry-Potter-Gryffindor-Haussocken wünscht - und nach stundenlangem Stash-Tauchen musste ich feststellen, dass ich weder ein leuchtendes Dunkelrot noch ein Gelbgold habe - DAS war doch mal die richtige Chance, mein schon lange in der Schublade befindliches Kool Aid zu aktivieren!

And this was the trigger: One of my two favorite kids told me that her Christmas wish is Harry Potter Gryffindor house socks. After hours of stash diving I had to admit that I had neither a bright dark red nor a sunny yellow - THAT was the real chance to activate my Kool Aid that had been in a drawer for quite a time!

Und los ging's - Farben angerührt - der Garten roch direkt wie eine Bonbonfabrik!

And then I started - mixing the colored water - and the garden instantly smelled like a candy factory!

Der Literkrug war zu klein, um die Wolle darin zu bewegen - also habe ich einfach umgefüllt in ein größeres Gefäß.

The liter jug was too small to move the yarn - so I changed to a larger pot.

5 gelbe (mango), 6 dunkelrote (dark cherry) Kool Aid Tütchen für jeweils 100 g Wolle

5 yellow (mango), 6 dark red (dark cherry) Kool Aid portions for 100 g each

Nach 3 Stunden war das Wasser klar, die Wolle hatte alle Farbstoffe aufgenommen.

3 hours later the water was clear, the wool had sucked in all color.

Ordentlich in Microwellen-Frischhaltefolie verpackt

Wrapped up into microwace plastic wrap

zweimal jeweils 2 Minuten auf höchster Stufe mit etwas Pause dazwischen


twice 2 minutes on highest level with a little pause inbetween

Danach gespült - oh Wunder, selbst das Rot gab klares Spülwasser, da ist nichts ausgeblutet!

Und jetzt dürfen die beiden Stränge trocknen.


Then rinsed - oh wonder, even the red didn't color the rinsing water, it stayed clear!

And now both skeins are drying.

Und weil das so irre spannend ist und Spaß gemacht hat, habe ich zwischendurch direkt weiteres Garn eingeweicht - jeweils 200 g dunkelbraunes und naturfarbenes Naturgarn von Angelika Rübezahli!

And because this is so exciting and so much fun, I directly soaked some more yarn inbetween - 200 g of dark brown and natural white natural yarn of Angelika Rübezahli!

Hier habe ich die Farbe direkt in das Weichwasser gekippt - das Weiß sollte richtig grün werden, das Dunkelbraune einen Aubergine-Ton annehmen.

Here I added the color directly into the soaking water - the white yarn shall become a bright green, the dark brown yarn I want to get a shade of aubergine.

10 Päckchen Lemon-Lime für 200 g


10 packs of lemon-lime for 200 g

Und für das Aubergine habe ich wild gemischt:
3 Dark Cherry
5 Mixed Berry
6 Blue Raspberry

For the aubergine color I mixed:

Das Grüne entwickelt sich auf dem weißen Garn sehr schnell.

The green shade evolves very fast on the white yarn.

Aber wird das dunkelbraune Garn wirklich Farbe annehmen?

Will the dark brown yarn really take color?

Ich habe es dann über Nacht in der Farbe gelassen.

I left the yarn in the dye overnight.

Ja!!!!!! Das Dunkelbraun ist etwas Aubergine geworden!

Yeah!!!! The dark brown has become aubergine!

Das grüne Wasser war ganz klar geworden, aber in meiner Mixfarbe waren noch reichlich Farbpartikel - zu schade zum Wegkippen!

The green water had become clear, but my mixed colored water still showed a lot of color - would have been too bad to throw it away!

Also habe ich einen trockenen Strangs FMS reingeworfen - mal gucken, was passiert!

So I took a dry skein of FMS - what would happen?

Nach 3 Minuten war der mir dunkel genug und ich hab ihn rausgenommen!
Spannend - bei trockenem Garn wird die Farbe uneinheitlicher, gefällt mir sehr!

3 minutes later this one was dark enough and I took it out!
So exciting - dry yarn will get colored less evenly, I like that very much!

Immer noch reichlich Farbe im Eimer - also noch nen Strang FMS trocken reingeworfen - und weil das so ein Babyblau wurde, noch mal eben 3 Tütchen Lemonade-Gelb nachgeworfen :)!

Still lots of color in the bucket - so I threw another skein of FMS in - this one became quite baby blue, so I added 3 packs of lemonade-yellow :)!

Nach dem Fixieren in der Microwelle - das Braun IST Aubergine, das Grün richtig toll knallig, und meine beiden Überraschungsstränge FMS gefallen mir richtig gut!

After fixating the color in the microwave oven - the brown has become aubergine, the green is as bright as possible, and my two surprise skeins I like very much!

Und jetzt dürfen sie trocknen!

And now they can dry!

Mein Fazit:
Färben mit Kool Aid macht richtig Spaß, und es ist bestimmt nicht das letzte Mal, dass ich damit rumgeplantscht habe!
Man sollte es aber draußen machen, denn das Zeugs riecht sehr intensiv :)!
Für mich toll ist, dass die Farben kalt und ohne Erwärmen funktionieren!
Die Farben lassen sich gut mischen, man kann damit bestimmt noch viel mehr spielen ...

Dying yarn with Kool Aid is real fun, and it won't be the last time that I played with it!
You should do that outside, Kool Aid smells very intensively :)!
I love that the colors are cold and don't need to be heated!
The colors can be mixed, and there definitely are a lot of possiblities to play with ...
