Und noch ein Garntest mit Top-Ergebnis - in der 2. Etappe!

Dominik von Jawolle hatte mir noch ein zweites Garn zum Testen geschickt.

Das ist Silky Merino, eine Mischung aus 50% Seide und 50% Merino – traumhaft weicher seidiger Griff, schön zweifach verzwirnt. 700 Meter Lauflänge auf 100 Gramm, da reicht für viele Tücher ein Strang.

Ich habe erst das Rohgarn getestet, dann das von der Drachenwolle gefärbte Garn. Der Bericht wird also etwas länger !

This is Silky Merino, 50% silk 50% merino mix – very soft, the typical silky haptic, 2 plies twisted. 700 meters for 100 g, so one skein will be sufficient for a lot of shawls.
First I tested the raw yarn, then Silky Merino hand dyed by Drachenwolle – so this report will become a bit longer !



Test 1: Wie lässt das Garn sich wickeln?

Der Strang hat Übergröße, den packt meine Haspel so gerade – bin gespannt, was diejenigen sagen, die mit einer Schirmhaspel wickeln, ob es damit auch geht.

Ergebnis: 2 von 3 Strängen ließen sich prima wickeln, auch mit dem normalen Royal Wickler, wunderschöne Knäule!

In einem der Stränge waren 2 Knoten, und beim Anknoten war das Garn quer durch den Strang gezogen worden … also musste ich den Rest des Stranges mit der Hand wickeln.


 

Test 1: How does the yarn behave on the wool winder?

The skein is larger than normal size, my swift is hardly able to hold it – I am excited about the reports of those winding it with an umbrella shaped swift, whether this will work.

Result: 2 of 3 skeins made no problems in winding, even with the normal Royal wool winder, beautiful balls!

One of the skeins had 2 knots. And when the yarn was knotted, it had been pulled all through the skein … so I had to wind the remaining yarn by hand.

Ergebnis: Wickeltest im Großen und Ganzen bestanden!

Result: Ball winding test more or less passed!

Und herauszubekommen, wie sich ein Garn strickt und wie das Maschenbild ist, reicht das fürs Erste.

Gestrickt mit KnitPro Cubics Rosenholz 3,5 mm – tolles Maschenbild, und diese ganz dezente semisolide Färbung ist einfach ein Traum! Ohne Blitz sieht man den Glanz des Garnes noch besser.

Ich würde mal sagen, dass das Garn für eine 3er bis 3,5er Nadel geeignet ist – strickt sich super schnell und flüssig, keine Ecken und Kanten im Garn.

Wie immer bei Seide: Krausrechts sieht ziemlich unordentlich aus, glatt rechts kommt sie wunderschön heraus!

Da bin ich aber echt froh, dass das Garn jetzt so klasse und mit schnurgeradem Maschenverlauf herauskommt, mein erstes Ergebnis mit dem Rohgarn sah nämlich ganz anders aus …

This is my washed and dried swatch – more didn’t I knit!
In order to get a result how the yarn knits up and how its stitch definition looks like, this is fine – as a first step.
Das ist meine gewaschene und getrocknete Maschenprobe – denn mehr habe ich nicht gestrickt!

I knitted with KnitPicks rose wood Cubics 3.5 mm – wonderful stitch definition, and this slightly semisolid hand dyed shade is just a dream! Without the flashlight, you can see the shine of the yarn even better.

To my opinion, the yarn can be knitted with needles size 3.00 to 3.5 mm – it knits up very fast and fluently, no edges in the yarn.

Garter stitch looks quite untidy, as does it most of the times when knitted with silk. Stockinette stitch looks beautiful!

I am so glad the knitted yarn now looks so gorgeous, and the stitch columns are straight now! My first try with the raw yarn looked a lot different …

Und zwar so:

The knitted fabric showed a heavy torsion.

Und das Garn äußerte sein Bedürfnis, bitte noch einmal gezwirnt zu werden, laut und deutlich.

And the yarn shouted its wish to get plied and twisted once again, unmistakably.

Kurz durch Wasser gezogen, auf Spannstange hängend trocknen lassen.

Just a short bath, then threaded onto blocking wire to let it dry hanging.

Und man konnte zugucken, wie es sich wieder schief zog!

Nach Rücksprache mit Christiane Drachenwolle was Neues und Wichtiges gelernt:
Wenn ein Garn nach dem Spinnen bzw. Zwirnen nicht ordentlich gewaschen bzw. gedämpft wird und nicht lange genug ruht, hat die Drehung keine Chance, sich richtig zu „setzen“ – das Garn verstrickt sich dann mit Drall, die Maschensäulen laufen schief.

Also den Probelappen noch einmal gründlich gewässert und trocknen lassen.

 

After talking to Christiane Drachenwolle, I learned something new:
If you don’t wash or steam a yarn properly after spinning or twisting, and if the yarn is not allowed to rest long enough, the twist does not have a chance to get settled – the yarn will knit up showing torsion, the stitch columns will be lopsided.

So the swatch got a proper long bath and was dried again.

Schon deutlich besser.

That’s a lot better.

Ich habe dann auf das von Christiane handgefärbte Garn gewartet, Christiane hatte nämlich einige Probestränge zum Test-Färben bekommen.

Durch das Färben bekommt das Garn nämlich die Behandlung, die es eigentlich direkt nach dem Spinnen bzw. Zwirnen gebraucht hätte:
Ein ausgedehntes Vollbad, langsam hängend trocknen, damit sich die Zwirnung richtig setzt.

Wenn es dann immer noch schief zieht, stimmen Spinn- und Zwirnschlag nicht überein – dann wäre es zwar immer noch ein wunderschönes Garn, das sich hervorragend zu Rechts-Links-Mustern verarbeiten lässt, aber nicht zu Glatt-Rechts-Gestrick!

Bei Rechts-Links-Mustern gleicht sich der „Zug“ des Garns nämlich aus, und das Gestrick läuft trotz Drall im Garn gerade – ein Phänomen, das man von vielen einfädigen Garnen kennt.

 

Then I waited for the hand dyed yarn. Christiane had got some test hanks to test dying the Silky Merino.

If you hand dye yarn, the process includes all the steps that normally belong to the spinning and twisting process: A good long bath, slowly drying hanging, so the twist can really settle.

If the yarn will still show torsion then, the spinning and twisting don’t match. It would still be a beautiful yarn but one that can only be knitted in knit-purl patterns with stitches alternating regularly, stockinette stitch will be not possible!
If you alternate knit and purl stitches, the tension of the stitches pulls into different directions, so the fabric will still look straight even if the yarn shows torsion – that’s a phenomenon you know of a lot of one-plies.

Aufgeregt war ich schon, als ich dann am Donnerstag die handgefärbte Silky Merino in Händen hatte – erster Test, ob sich immer noch Löckchen bilden – minimal, wie bei den meisten anderen Garnen auch, das ließ hoffen!

Durch das richtige Waschen beim Färben ist die Silky Merino wunderschön aufgegangen, richtig voluminös geworden trotz 700m Lauflänge auf 100 g.

I was so excited to get the dyed Silky Merino on Thursday! First test whether it still wanted to twist – the result shows minimal twisting, not more than with most yarns, new hope!

The thorough washing helped the stands of Silky Merino to really breathe and open up, the yarn got really voluminous in spite of 700 meters per 100 grams.  
 

Donnerstag abend dann um 9 mit der Maschenprobe über 50 Maschen begonnen, wieder mit der 3,5er Cubics Holznadel, und nicht aufhören können :)!

Um hab 2 war es dann so weit – frisch abgekettet! Und gerader Fadenlauf!!!!!



 

On Thursday night at 9 p.m. I started with a swatch on50 stitches, again with the 3.5 mm Cubics wooden needle, and I couldn’t stop :)!

At 1.30 a.m. I finally cast off – AND: The stitch columns look straight!!!

Und damit sich keiner meiner vierbeinigen Mitbewohner an den Spannstangen verletzt, sah das hier dann so aus:
Was ein Glück, dass Biene ihre Spannmatte beim letzten Stricktreff hier vergessen hat, die konnte ich dann gleich als Hintergrund nehmen :)!

I have to be careful that none of my furry family members get hurt – so my apartment looked like this:
What a lucky thing that Sabine forgot her blocking mat last Stricktreff, it worked out fine as a blocking background :)!

Am Freitagmorgen war das Läppchen immer noch feucht – zu sehen ist die linke Rückseite.

On Friday morning, the swatch was still damp – you can see the purled wrong side.

Freitag nachmittag war’s dann richtig trocken:

Schnurgerader Maschenverlauf – da bin ich aber froh!!!!!

It was really dry Friday afternoon:

I am so happy – the stitch columns are dead straight!!!!!

Auch nach einem Tag Ruhen hat sich nichts verändert, das Läppchen ist wunderschön gerade geblieben!

One day rest didn’t change anything: the swatch stayed beautifully straight!



 




Fazit Test 2:

Man lernt immer noch Neues, das ist klasse!

Rohgarn NIE ohne ausgiebiges Bad und langsames Trocknen verstricken!

Die Silky Merino lässt sich super verstricken und gibt ein wunderschönes gerades Strickbild in glatt rechts!



Conclusion of Test 2:

You never stop learning, that’s great!

NEVER use raw yarn without a long and thorough bath and a slow drying process!

Silky Merino knits up easily and the stitch definition is beautiful in Stockinette Stitch!

Da das Garn bei dieser Maschenprobe überhaupt nicht strapaziert wurde, habe ich am ersten Probelappen noch Test 3 auf Belastbarkeit gemacht.

Nicht mit mir schimpfen, ich weiß, dass das Garnquälerei ist, aber wie sonst will ich beurteilen können, wie sich das Garn unter normaler Belastung verhält????? Ich habe mich auch ordentlich entschuldigt …

 

By knitting just a swatch the yarn wasn’t stressed at all, so I made Test 3 – the stress test with the first swatch.

Please don’t shout at me, I know this was more of a yarn torture, but how else will I know how the yarn reacts to everyday stress? I apologized, of course …

 

Belastungstest 1:
Ich habe das Läppchen auf Hälfte gefaltet (rechts auf rechts) und einen Tag lang im Wollsocken unter der Fußsohle spazieren getragen – ich denke, das entspricht der Belastung, die ein Tuch aushalten muss, gerade an den Kanten.

Die linke Seite des Läppchens zeigt das Ergebnis dieses Tests: Weniger Pilling als erwartet!

 

Stress Test 1:

I folded the swatch double (knit side to knit side), put it into my woolen sock under the sole and carried it around for a day – I suppose that’s the stress a shawl has, esp. on its edges.

The left side of the swatch shows the result: Less pilling than I had supposed!



Die Silky Merino ist als feines Tuchgarn also bestens geeignet!

So Silky Merino is really appropriate for fine shawls!

Belastungstest 2:

Bei Bekleidung sind die Stellen, an denen ständig am Garn gescheuert wird, vor allem unter den Armen und seitlich am Vorderteil. Ich hab dann mal meine Haarbürste in Aktion genommen und der rechten Hälfte des Läppchens 100 Bürstenstriche verpasst.
 

Stress Test 2:

If you knit garments, the yarn suffers the most scrubbing and rubbing under the sleeves and on both sides of the front. So I took my hairbrush and gave the right side of the swatch 100 strokes with the brush.





Wie man sieht, entsteht ein Flausch – das war auch nicht anders zu erwarten!

Wenn zwei Garne mit so unterschiedlicher Stapellänge wie Seide und Wolle miteinander versponnen werden, dann neigen die Wollfasern dazu, sich zusammenzuschieben, vor allem unter Belastung. Und wenn dann das Garn heftig gerieben wird, entsteht das allseits nicht gerade geschätzte Pilling …

As you can see, the yarns pills and roughens – that’s what I had expected!

If you combine two fibers with a very different staple length like wool and silk and spin them, the wool tends to shift and build little piles, esp. when really stressed. If you then rub the yarn heavily, you produce the pilling effect that we all hate …

Fazit Test 3:

Die Silky Merino ist ein wunderbares Garn für feine Tücher!

Als Bekleidungsgarn ist sie meiner Einschätzung nach nicht geeignet, da sie unter Belastung und Reibung deutliches Pilling zeigt.

Conclusions of Test 3:

Silky Merino is a wonderful yarn for fine shawls!

In my estimation, it should not be used as a yarn for knitting garments, because it shows obvious pilling when stressed and rubbed.

 

Und jetzt freu ich mich drauf, diese beiden Schönheiten zu „was Ordentlichem“ zu verstricken – im nächsten Jahr, wenn ich meine Weihnachtsgeschenke dann fertig habe ….   

And now I’m looking forward to knitting these two beauties into something beautiful – next year when I have finished all my Christmas presents ….
